New ACMA powers to combat misinformation and disinformation | Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development, Communications and the Arts

This is my submission to the Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development, Communications and the Arts.

Submission 18th August 2023 L van Buuren 1

As nurses, quoted in The International Code of Ethics, we are to apply these elements of the code in our nursing practice.

ICN_Code-of-Ethics_EN_Web.pdf

“1.1  Nurses’ primary professional responsibility is to people requiring nursing care and services now or in the future, whether individuals, families, communities or populations.”

“1.8  Nurses demonstrate professional values such as respect, justice, responsiveness, caring, compassion, empathy, trustworthiness and integrity. They support and respect the dignity and universal rights of all people, including patients, colleagues and families.”

It is vital we walk the path of the middle road with compassion and humility, without judgement, but rather discernment, and ensure we all, as human beings, have an awareness of the creative process and responsibilities of our speech and written words.

This is my personal interpretation and my personal words, of how I view and take my responsibility and accountability of the NMBA Nursing Code of Conduct, the ICN, The International Code of Ethics for Nurses and NSW National Law, as an Australian Registered Nurse.

I acknowledge other nurses might not agree with my interpretation of these codes and I welcome and respect that with compassion and integrity. I have hope and faith we as a nursing profession will walk the path of the middle road and discuss all of our interpretations and concerns respectfully with the sole focus being gold standard healthcare for public health and safety.

I have hope and faith that we will all be met with the nursing values of respect and integrity for all interpretations and perspectives and that we as a profession, will lead the way and work together harmoniously, in collaboration and unity, seeking understanding with a commitment to learn from and honor the differences with compassion and humility for each other, understanding that we are all equal.

In my open letter to the Healthcare Workers in 2020, I talk about the stress response and how it impedes our logical thinking brain by shutting down the prefrontal cortex. This Pandemic has created a state of chronic stress over the past three years and when we are in stress, we are in survival mode. Fight, Flight, Freeze.  Survival mode needs to be addressed on a personal level. We need to Calm the Caveman. We can address so much simply by the way we breathe; we are breathing anyway; we may as well make each breath count.

Cycle of Calm 1.0 (themindfulnurseaustralia.com.au)

From my heart to yours,
In Integrity, Honesty, Compassion, Respect, Justice, Responsiveness, Caring, Empathy, Trustworthiness and Humility,
Yours Sincerely,

Lucinda
